Writing & files / Diff Desk
Compare two versions of your text
Find added, removed, and matching lines in two text versions. Ignore case or spacing, review changes, and download a report without uploading your files.
See which lines were added, removed, or left in place.
Read what changed
Two versions, one clear comparison.
Compare notes, copy, small configuration files, or a list someone updated. Diff Desk lines up the shared text and marks additions and removals, so you can review changes without uploading either version.
A changed line usually appears once as removed and once as added. The tool compares complete lines; it does not interpret code or mark individual changed characters. Your source text remains untouched.
What do the options ignore?
“Ignore letter case” treats A and a as equal. “Ignore repeated and edge spaces” collapses repeated spaces or tabs and ignores whitespace at line edges. These options affect matching, not your text. If matched lines differ under an ignored option, both original versions are displayed.
How are newlines handled?
Windows, Mac, and Unix line endings are normalized. One final newline is ignored on each side. Extra blank lines inside the text still matter. With repeated identical lines, more than one alignment can be equally valid; the tool chooses one consistently.
Is the download a patch?
No. It is a plain-text reading report with + for additions, − for removals, and the comparison options at the top. It is intended for review or sharing, not for applying changes to a file with Git or another patch tool.
Which files can I compare?
Use UTF-8 plain text, up to 100 KB and 500 lines per side. Small Markdown, JSON, CSV, XML, or code files can be compared as text. PDFs, Word documents, spreadsheets, and other binary formats need a plain-text export first. An empty side is allowed when the other side has text.
